# Marvellous Mayas

Year 5 have made a fantastic start to their new history topic. We have learned how and why the Maya’s made masks for different occasions, and had a go at making our own.

# Time Zones

As part of our Science work on Earth and Space, we have learnt that although the Sun appears to move in the sky, it is in fact the Earth that is moving. We have then learnt that different parts of the world have different times because of the movement of the Earth.

We investigated and explored different Time Zones by using maps, atlases and Google Earth.

# Deciphering Decimals

Today in Mathematics, we have started our new topic – Decimals. We have learnt that we can use apparatus to represent our decimals.

We learnt that we can use a one thousand block to represent one, a hundred square to represent a tenth, a ten stick to represent a hundredth and a one to represent a thousandth. We then drew these in different representations using picture and place value counters.

We will continue to use this apparatus to further understand decimals.

# World Book Day 2019

Year 5 had a fantastic time celebrating World Book Day. We dressed up as our favourite characters, shared our favourite books with each other and our partner class and we’re lucky enough to have a visit from a local author, Sarah Griffiths. Sarah read us one of her stories, and explained to us how she bacame a published author.

# Solar system fun.

Today we have been investigating the difference between a geocentric and heliocentric solar system.

# Sporting Challenge

We completed our sporting challenge with our partner class year 1. We have new challenges to complete this term to work towards being the very best we can be.
